Måndag/Monday #49

I received three books in the mail today. As you might know, I collect Nancy Drew books. For a while, my newest additions to my collection have been from the newest Nancy Drew series (Nancy Drew Diaries), that has not yet been translated to Swedish, and a graphic novel. My collection is Starring to grow! When I happen to walk past a book that is not in my collection, this mostly happens in second hand stores nowadays, I usually pick them up if the price tag is not too much and I don’t have too many unread Nancy books at home. A week or so ago, I saw three Nancy Drew books being sold as a package on the internet at a very reasonable price. So, I bought them, yay! The books are: An Instinct for Trouble, The Case of the Captured Queen and The Ghost of the Lantern Lady. The books are in great shape and I look forward to read them!

I just finished reading River Marked by Patricia Briggs. It’s the sixth book in the Mercy Thompson series. It’s not the best book in the series this far but I still enjoyed it really much! I love this series!

Have you bought or borrowed any books lately? What are you currently reading?

Måndag/Monday #48

I have finished three books since last Monday, and actually reviewed two of them! First up was an audiobook The Sweet Dreams Bake Shop, it was an okay listen but I’m not sure I’ll continue to listen to the series. The murderer was too predictable but the ending had me a little intrigued.

I finished The Hound of the Baskervilles next, a Sherlock Holmes mystery. I liked it but I was a little restless in my reading during the first half so I don’t think I appreciated it as much as I usually would. I was in a I want to read all my unread books at the same time state of mind. Reading all at once is not really realistic and I told myseld that I was ridiculous. Now, in a better reading mind. This book is part of my 2020 book reading challenge. I also have a Sherlock inspired book in the same challenge that I think I will pick up next, En Oscariansk skandal by Sven Sörmark. If I remember correctly, it’s about Sherlock in Stockholm.

Next up was Cherry Ames – Private Duty Nurse (Privatsköterska). I found this series a few years ago and liked it. There has been a hole in my collection so I could not continue the series. I decided to fix it a while back and bought two books in the series, I can now read a few more before I have to find the next missing one. This one was read in Swedish so I wrote the review in Swedish as well.

I am currently reading Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs. It’s the fifth book in the Mercy Thompson series. I really like this series and don’t think it’ll last so long. Luckily I have the next one in the series home as well!

What are you reading at the moment?

Cherry Ames – Privatsköterska

Cherry Ames – Privatsköterska – Helen Wells
Originaltitel: Cherry Ames – Private Duty Nurse (1946)
Serie: Cherry Ames #7
Typ av bok: Kartonage
Längd: 149 sidor
Förlag: Albert Bonniers förlag

Synopsis från Goodreads:
Cherry has been finally discharged from the Army and is back to civilian life. What should she do next after her intense years of Army nursing? Dr. Joe finds her a job as the private nurse of a celebrated musician suffering from a dangerous heart condition. How can Cherry help him avoid the deadly stress his devoted sister unintentionally causes when she visits fortuneteller after fortuneteller? Will their family secret be revealed?

Down the TBR-hole #10

Lost in a Story started with the Down the TBR Hole posts. I have written more about this in my first post in Swedish. Shortly it’s about cleansing your TBR shelf on Goodreads. This should probably be done to my physical shelf as well but let’s not get too crazy.

We are now in January 2016, quite a lot of books were added to my TBR then. It’s quite a mix, how exciting!

The Impostor Queen – Sarah Fine
I can’t really decide what to do with this book. I was hoping that my library would have it but no luck. Maybe I’ll let it be on my shelf and hope it turns up or request them to buy it?
Verdict: Stays.

Anna-Lisas antik – Eli Åhman Owetz
I have actually read this one since taking this screenshot so it is no longer in my TBR shelf. I liked it.
Verdict: –

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood Howard Pyle
I have always liked Robin Hood and such-inspired stories. Library has this one in Swedish so I think I’ll borrow it from there.
Verdict: Stays.

Britt-Marie var här / Britt-Marie was here – Fredrik Backman
I really like what I have read of Backman this far. This stays.
Verdict: Stays.

Ella Enchanted – Gail Carson Levine
I liked the movie with Hathaway, I assume that this is the same story. Not super excited but The library surprised me by having this, it goes into the to-borrow shelf.
Verdict: Stays.

Book of a Thousand Days – Shannon Hale
My audiobook service turned out to have this one. I suppose I give it a try!
Verdict: Stays.

The Seeker – Stephenie Meyer
I really liked The Host and liked the idea of a sequel. I’m not sure it’ll turn up though, any news about this one? I think I’ll remove it for now and if it is released I’ll probably hear about it then!
Verdict: Goes.

The Star-Touched Queen – Roshani Chokshi
I have a little trouble removing books from my TBR when they are available at the library. Not super excited at the moment but I’ll give it a shot.
Verdict: Stays.

The Vishakanya’s Choice – Roshani Chokshi
I think this one was added because of the assassin part. I’m not as intrigued now. It goes for now and if I like The Star-Touched Queen it might come back.
Verdict: Goes.

The Forbidden Wish – Jessica Khoury
I don’t remember this book, I’m not sure how I was recommended it. Aladdin retelling sounds fun but I think I’ll skip it this time.
Verdict: Goes.

Illuminae – Amie Kaufman
I’ve heard a lot of good things of this one. And it’s in space? Stays.
Verdict: Stays.

The Reader – Traci Chee
Nah, not excited for this one anymore. Not available at the library either and I don’t want to buy it.
Verdict: Goes.

How did it go this time?
Books in the TBR shelf at start: 240
Number of staying books: 7
Number of leaving books: 4
Total amount of leaving books: 40
Number of reserved books at the library:
Number of books put in to-borrow-shelf: 4
Number of books added to audiobook-account: 1
Current amount of books in my TBR shelf: 242

My TBR shelf is still growing even though I’ve removed totally 40 books with these posts. Even though I have added some of the books that are on my physical shelf since the last post, I am only one book more than then. I am at the moment mostly reading books from my own shelf now that the nearest library is temporarily closed so I should be able to work through some of the books in the TBR shelf as well!

Have you read any of these? Did you like them?

The Sweet Dreams Bake Shop

The Sweet Dreams Bake Shop – J. A. Whiting
Original title: The Sweet Dreams Bake Shop (2015)
Series: Sweet Cove Mystery #1
Next book in the series: Murder So Sweet #2
Type of book: Audiobook
Length: 4h 32min
Publishing house: Tantor Audio

Synopsis from Tantor Media:
Angie Roseland runs the Sweet Dreams Bake Shop in the seacoast town of Sweet Cove, Massachusetts. The building’s new owners are not renewing the bake shop’s lease, and Angie is running out of time to find a new location. When one of the town’s longtime residents is murdered, Angie finds herself on the suspect list. With the help of her three sisters and a huge orange cat, Angie works to uncover the killer’s identity.

Many of my listens lately have been the café owner is wrongfully accused of murder and solves the murder in order to save themselves-type of books. I think I need to mix it up a little with other things too.

So, how was this one?

It was very predictable in a as soon as the murdered was introduced I knew who did it kind of way. Sometimes there are many suspects and you have at some point suspected the right one but then changed your mind when new facts are introduced, but here the decoys were too obvious decoys so they didn’t really convince me.

I didn’t really care for the love interest in the book, I think it could have worked well without it. Maybe if the main character hadn’t been so much I find him so attractive even though I shouldn’t. Also, who buys their brother a house as a birthday gift? We didn’t really get a lot of background there.

There was also this thing at the ending that I both disliked and got me a bit intrigued to see how things will turn out. I don’t really want to say what it is because it is at the very end but I hope this includes the cat as well.

Even though there were some things I didn’t like, it was an okay listen. It was a bit cosy to have in the background. I just might listen to the next one as well in order to see where the ending of this one takes us.

I gave the book 2 out of 5 stars – it was okay.

Måndag/Monday #47

So, I am back to writing in English. Well, probably some posts will still be in Swedish but we will see where things take us.

What is this Monday post? It started out as a weekly reminder to myself to update my blog after a more or less break from blogging. It is also a way for me to mention books that I might not review. I do not always have a lot to say about a book but I might want to mention it anyway and here is a great place to do that. So far, I have actually posted every Monday, except for that time where I forgot to press publish so it came on a Tuesday instead.

How are things today? Could be worse! At this moment I am lying on a spike mat because my tail bone is hurting. It is a pain in my butt, literally. Otherwise, things are great! Speaking of tails, I have not read a lot of books about humans having tails. Are there many out there I have missed? Any book recommendations for those?

We are going to discuss Flickan från ingenstans (The Passage) by Justin Cronin tomorrow at work we have also started looking over the books we are going to vote about for the next read. I finished reading Flickan från ingenstans last week and I am eager to continue reading the next book, I want to know what happens. I though Flickan från ingenstans was slow in the start but once the pace picks up, it was very exciting. We did some guessing throughout the book to guess what was going to happen but we were mostly wrong. I have the next book at home already and plan on picking it up soon!

I am currently reading Heat Wave by Richard Castle and Fritt Fall by Anneli Olsson. The latter a Swedish indie debutante that was just released, I have heard a lot of good things about it so I hope I will like it too.

What are you reading at the moment?

The Case of the Stuttering Bishop

The Case of the Stuttering Bishop – Erle Stanley Gardner
Originaltitel: The Case of the Stuttering Bishop (1936)
Serie: Perry Mason #9
Typ av bok: Pocket
Längd: 189 sidor
Förlag: Pocket Book Inc.

Från bokens baksida:
The Bishop made Perry Mason a proposition. It involved a tightwad millionaire, a twenty-two-year-old manslaughter charge, a phony granddaughter, and a three hundred thousand dollar fee–maybe.

As he was leaving Mason’s office, Bishop Mallory also said: “The only change you stand of winning the case is through my testimony as a witness.”

“How did you size him up?” Della Street asked.

“If he’s a bishop,” said Mason, “he’s pretty human.”

“Why do you say,
if he’s a bishop?”

Mason said slowly, “Bishops don’t stutter.”

But this Bishop not only stuttered, he got hit over the head and disappeared and Perry Mason was off on an inquiry that will startle even those fans accustomed to his dramatic adventur
es.

Murder with Crows

Murder of Crows – Anne Bishop
Original titel: Murder of Crows (2014)
Serie: The Others (#2)
Andra böcker i serien: Written in Red (#1), Vision in Silver (#3), Marked in Flesh (#4), Etched in Bone (#5), Lake Silence (#6), Wild Country (#7)
Typ av bok: Pocket
Längd: 413 sidor
Förlag: ROC / Penguin Group

Synopsis till första boken från Goodreads:
As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.
