Obernewtyn – Isobelle Carmody
Original Title: Obernewtyn.
I give this book 4 out of 5 possible stars.
Obernewtyn is the first book out of the Obernewtyn Chronicles. The following books are The Farseekers, Ashling, The Keeping Place and The Stone Key.
This chronicle is about a world struggling back from the brink of epocalypse, life is hard. But for Elspeth Gordie, born with enchanced mental abilities that would see her sterilised or burned if discouvered, it is even more dangerous. There is only survival by secerecy, so she determines to never use her forbidden powers. But it is as if they have their own imperative, and their use inevitably brings her to the councils attention.
Elspeth is sent to the remote mountain institute of Obernewtyn where escape is impossible. But something is calling her. Elspeth must use her powers to find out what it is, only then she will learn the true extent to her powers.
Haaah, I loved Obernewton. OH, by the way, there’s a sixth (seventh? Fifth?) book to the series, I’m just not sure if it’s out yet. I looked in the bookstore recently and it wasn’t…Then again we have badly stocked bookstores! It’s called The Sending and I’m waiting for it to come into the libraries.
If you liked these ones, try Tamora Pierce’s series of The Song of the Goddess. It’s about a young girl who, after her parent’s death, is told she will be sent to the Mithran Cloisters to study scorcery. Mortified at the aspect of spending years learning hated magic, she swaps places with he twin brother, Thom, and poses as a boy for several years as she works to gain her Knight’s Shield.
Tamora Pierce’s books are full of just the right amount of romance, adventure and excitement for all fantasy-lovers. I would so like to hear of someone reading and enjoying the series!
